2013 Doctor of Philosophy with Title „The Konkani Song, Roots, Development, Documentation“ from the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna.
2010 Research sabbatical as Faculty member as well as Scholar at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign USA.
2008 MIA Award for Woman with migrant background in the field of Art and Culture.
Since 1991 Professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Workshops, Masterclasses around the globe, Jury member at International Competitions. 
1988-2006 Professor of Piano and Chamber Music at the Joseph Haydn Conservatory in
Eisenstadt.
Artistic Director and International Program Curator in Crossover and experimental projects, in which Fernandes incorporates classical, jazz and world music fusions with an emphasis on Improvisation. Intercultural exchange between Students, Teachers and Audiences. 
Since 2007 Series Cycle „Uno, Due, Tre“ in Musikverein Vienna. 
Fernandes has initiated several Projects with Women Composers and Gender themes. 
Born in Mumbai, Marialena Fernandes acquired her Licentiate Diploma of the Royal Schools of Music in 1967. (LRSM). A graduate from the Mumbai University in Psychology and Philosophy, Fernandes received a scholarship in 1972 for further musical education at the present Academy (now University) of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. 
1975 Diploma in Piano and Chamber Music Performance with unanimous distinctions, 
1988 Master of Art Education (Magister artium). 
Solo, Chamber Music and Orchestral concerts in most European capitals, but also in USA, Australia, Africa and Asia. Annual TV and Radio broadcasts. Judge on Panel for international
Piano and Chambermusic competitons.
